DUI Safety and Treatment Program

If you received a DUI in the state of West Virginia, you will need to complete the Safety and Treatment Program through one of the authorized West Virginia Providers. The West Virginia Program Curriculum is comprised of two components:

  • 18 hours of DUI education
  • A substance abuse evaluation/assessment
    • If the treatment assessment indicates a need for further treatment, the client must complete any recommended treatment to fulfill the West Virginia requirements. (considered Level II or III treatment with in-state providers)

The Division of Motor Vehicles Safety and Treatment Unit is responsible for establishing and providing oversight for a comprehensive safety and treatment program for driver's convicted of or revoked for driving under the influence of legal or illicit substances. WV Legislative Code states that Community Behavioral Health Centers and other providers shall offer and operate the Program under agreement with the DMV and must meet all State of West Virginia DUI Safety and Treatment Program Standards for Educational Curriculum, Treatment Services and Quality Assurance.

Level I Education Component Services$400.00

Legislative Rule requires the enrollment fee for Level I services be set at $400. This fee shall cover the provision of the Education Component (Level I) services. There may be additional costs for materials and testing/screening. This $400 fee does not cover the financial requirements of Level II and Level III services.

If you are experiencing financial difficulties, all WV Safety and Treatment Program Providers offer the State Indigent Program for those clients who are deemed eligible and meet the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Clients will need to inquire about Indigent Determination with their Safety and Treatment Provider.
